Empowering children from low socioeconomic backgrounds to strive for a better future
The neighborhoods in south Tel Aviv and Jaffa rank low on the city socioeconomic index and are characterized by disadvantage. Many parents do not have higher education qualifications and children have low cultural capital.
The Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo Education Administration aims to increase the number of children from south Tel Aviv and Jaffa who continue to higher education. One of the first steps to building a better future for these children is to offer them a horizon and exposing them to higher education from a young age.
To this end, the Education Administration developed a program for elementary school students in conjunction with Afeka Academic College for Engineering. It is a 10-day summer day camp for students in Grades 4-6 and features a range of activities, including lectures and workshops, laboratory experiences related to space, robotics, 3D printing, and fun days at various cultural sites and museums.
The program was piloted in the summer of 2018 with 40 students. Following its success, the program aims to expand to 400 students.
The Tel Aviv Foundation is seeking a philanthropic investment towards expansion of the pilot program to offer 400 elementary school students the opportunity to access higher education.
