Batsheva Arts Center
Strengthening the arts, place-making and urban renewal
The Batsheva Dance Company, based in Tel Aviv, is critically acclaimed and popularly embraced as one of the world’s preeminent contemporary dance companies. Batsheva’s Artistic Director, Ohad Naharin, is considered one of today’s most exciting, visionary, and original choreographers. Batsheva seeks to expand and build a new complex in the neighborhood of Neve Sha’anan, where it will play a central role in spurring the neighborhood’s cultural and economic growth. Neve Sha’anan is part of the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo’s master plan to transform and uplift the city’s southern region, which is characterized as a low socio-economic area.
The new Batsheva Arts Center is a state-of-the-art dance center designed by world-renowned architect Sir David Adjaye. It includes two theaters, studios, professional facilities, a roof-top garden, public reading room, and community spaces, all situated in an open square with trees, shade and water elements. Sir David Adjaye describes it as follows:
“…the campus is designed as a series of gathering spaces for community, culture and the arts. The buildings are conceived not as singular objects, but rather as a collective frame that organizes space for civic engagement and creative interaction.”
By its completion in 2022, the complex will be Israel’s preeminent multi-disciplinary arts center.
In addition to rehearsals and performances, the various spaces will be used by Batsheva to expand and diversify its education and community engagement programming, including free activities for local residents.
The Batsheva Arts complex will serve as a catalyst for creative place-making in Neve Sha’anan. It will transform the neighborhood’s currently underdeveloped square into a vibrant public gathering space: a local and global destination point. It will offer a rich array of programs and cultural experiences for residents and visitors to experience art in a stunning complex, within a historic setting.
